Meet Julia…

I began painting in Costa Rica 40 years ago. Inspired by the folk art paintings of the islands of Solentiname Nicaragua. My paintings were primitive and figurative. Many years later, I began painting more abstractly and discovered the medium of cold wax. After months of working with it on my own, I made three trips to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico to study with Jerry McLaughlin, recognized internationally as an expert of cold wax medium. In Santa Fe, I paint, co-own the Violin Shop of Santa Fe, and perform music as part of a duo “Full Owl” and spend time with my family.

Artist Statement

With imagination as my guide, my painting is an intuitive process evolving over time, working with color and texture, building and layering until a painting reveals itself. Some paintings arrive quickly others take months of revisiting before they feel complete. I begin each painting without a fixed notion, and enjoy the painting’s unfolding. Using primarily cold wax and oil paint, my paintings are inspired by the natural world, shapes, forms and places along my journeys.
